California & Las Vegas 2011

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Adventure: Our 2011 California and Vegas holiday

In 2011, we set off on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure across California and Las Vegas. Leaving behind the UK, we boarded a Virgin Atlantic 747 Jumbo Jet and began what would be the holiday of a lifetime. Our trip took us from the glitz of Los Angeles to the neon lights of Las Vegas, the relaxation of San Diego, and the iconic sights of San Francisco. Each destination offered something unique, and we filled our days with excitement, wonder, and unforgettable memories.

LA – The City of Stars

We landed at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and made our way to the Fairmont Hotel in Santa Monica, where we stayed for three nights. Santa Monica, with its cool vibe and beachside charm, was the perfect place to start our exploration of the City of Angels. Over the next few days, we crammed in as many sights as we could.

We took a Hollywood tour, cruising past the famous Walk of Fame and the iconic Hollywood Sign. A trip to Beverly Hills gave us a glimpse of luxury, as we strolled along Rodeo Drive, dreaming of a shopping spree. We also hit up Venice Beach, where the laid-back atmosphere and quirky characters made for a memorable afternoon.

For the true Disney magic, we visited Disneyland and Universal Studios. At Disneyland, we marveled at the themed lands, from the thrilling Space Mountain ride to the enchanting Sleeping Beauty Castle. At Universal Studios, the studio tour took us behind the scenes of some of Hollywood’s biggest films, giving us a peek into the world of movie-making magic.

Vegas – Neon Lights and Thrills

Next, we boarded a Virgin America flight to Las Vegas and checked into the Paris Hotel right on the famous Las Vegas Strip. It was the perfect base for our three days of indulgence in this 24/7 entertainment mecca.

We spent some time in the casinos, testing our luck with a little gambling. The bright lights, the constant buzz of excitement, and the sound of slot machines were unlike anything we’d ever experienced. But it wasn’t all about the casinos. One of the highlights of our Vegas trip was seeing the legendary magician David Copperfield perform at the MGM Grand. To our surprise, I was chosen to join Copperfield on stage for one of his mind-blowing tricks – an experience I’ll never forget.

Our next adventure in Vegas was something truly spectacular – a helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon. A limo picked us up from our hotel and whisked us away to Sundance Helicopters. From there, we soared over the Grand Canyon, landing at the bottom for lunch – an experience that felt surreal and awe-inspiring. We then flew over the Las Vegas Strip for a bird’s-eye view of the city before returning to the airport, feeling like we’d just experienced something out of a dream.

San Diego – A Relaxing Escape

After the high-octane thrills of Las Vegas, it was time to relax and unwind. We headed to Paradise Point in San Diego, a peaceful haven by the beach. Here, we spent a few blissful days enjoying the sunshine and tranquility.

While in San Diego, we couldn’t miss a visit to SeaWorld, where we got up close with incredible marine life. The highlight was seeing the killer whales – the sheer size and power of these magnificent creatures were breathtaking.

San Francisco – Iconic Sights and Good Friends

Our final destination was the vibrant city of San Francisco. We stayed in the heart of the city at Union Square, which made exploring the city’s many attractions incredibly easy. We also had the chance to meet up with an old school friend who lives in San Francisco. He showed us all the local gems, from the winding turns of Lombard Street to the stunning views from the Golden Gate Bridge.

No trip to San Francisco would be complete without visiting the famous Mrs. Doubtfire house, which brought back so many great memories of the beloved film. We also took a trip to Pier 39, where we watched the sea lions lounging in the sun, and then headed out to Alcatraz Island. The tour of the old prison was both eerie and fascinating, offering a glimpse into one of America’s most notorious sites.

On top of sightseeing, we also ventured out to Napa Valley for a wine-tasting tour. The rolling vineyards were absolutely stunning, and the wines were delicious. It was the perfect way to relax after our whirlwind adventure.

To wrap up our San Francisco visit, we rented bikes and rode along Fisherman’s Wharf, enjoying the scenic views and the cool breeze. The bike ride was the perfect end to an unforgettable trip.

Reflecting on the Journey

Our 2011 holiday across California and Las Vegas was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From the glamour of LA and the excitement of Vegas to the natural beauty of the Grand Canyon and the charm of San Francisco, every stop offered something unique and special. Whether it was the magic of Hollywood, the thrill of a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon, or the warmth of reconnecting with an old friend, this holiday remains one of our fondest memories. It was an adventure that we’ll always cherish, a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and pure joy.
