A Relaxing and Adventurous Holiday in Rhodes -2010

In August 2010, we had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful island of Rhodes, Greece, for a sun-soaked and memorable holiday. Our stay was at the Blue Sea Beach Resort, a fantastic hotel located right on the coast, perfect for those who want to combine relaxation with a little adventure. The resort provided everything we needed for a laid-back holiday: a beautiful beach, great food, and impeccable service. The summer heat was intense, but that just meant more time lounging by the crystal-clear waters, soaking up the sun. By the end of the week, I had achieved the perfect tan!

Old Town Rhodes

While the resort was ideal for unwinding, we didn’t want to miss out on exploring the island’s rich history and culture. So, we decided to hire a car for the duration of our trip, which gave us the flexibility to see the best tourist sites at our own pace. Our first big stop was the Old Town of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage site that truly transports you back in time. The narrow cobblestone streets, surrounded by medieval battlements, were a sight to behold. Walking through the town, we could feel the weight of history with every step, and the local culture was evident in the charming shops, cafes, and markets. The blend of ancient and modern is what makes Rhodes Old Town so captivating.

One of the highlights of our visit to the Old Town was the harbour, where I had the most delicious corn on the cob I’ve ever tasted. It was simple but divine—just slathered with butter and a sprinkle of salt. Sometimes, the simplest things leave the most lasting impressions.

Next, we made our way to the Acropolis of Rhodes (also known as the Temple of Apollo), where the historical ruins provided a glimpse into ancient Greek civilization. The views from the top were spectacular, offering a panoramic view of the city and the sea. The ruins themselves were fascinating, and we took plenty of time to explore the site and learn about its history.

Lindos

Later in the week, we drove down to Lindos, a picturesque village on the coast. The village was stunning, with its whitewashed buildings, narrow alleys, and beautiful beaches. We had lunch at a rooftop restaurant with a view of the sparkling blue waters below, enjoying a classic Greek salad. After lunch, we experienced a unique form of transport—a donkey ride up to the Acropolis of Lindos, perched high above the town. The ride was both fun and exhilarating, and the views from the top were absolutely breathtaking. The ancient ruins of the Temple of Athena Lindia were impressive, and standing at the top of the hill, it was easy to imagine the bustling life that must have once surrounded this ancient site.

One of the best parts of our island adventure was when we embarked on a circular road trip around Rhodes. We stumbled upon Prasonisi Beach, a magical place where the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea meet. The beach itself was stunning, with golden sands and crystal-clear waters. To our surprise, we also discovered a kite-flying festival happening right there on the beach! It was a delightful sight to see the sky filled with vibrant kites. We parked our car on the beach to watch the festivities, but when we returned to it, we had a slight panic—the car had sunk into the soft sand! Luckily, with a little effort, we managed to free it and get back on the road without too much trouble.

No trip to Rhodes would be complete without a visit to Faliraki, known as the party capital of the island. While we didn’t find it overcrowded with tourists, we enjoyed a leisurely walk around, stopping for drinks at some lively bars. Faliraki also boasts a popular water park, and we spent a fun afternoon there, cooling off on the slides and relaxing in the pools.

Rhodes, in all its beauty and history, truly offered the best of both worlds—relaxing beach days and thrilling cultural explorations. Whether it was lounging at our resort, discovering ancient ruins, enjoying delicious food, or stumbling upon hidden gems, this island holiday left us with unforgettable memories. It was the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure, and I’m already dreaming of returning one day.
